Vietalk — live voice translator
Two people without a common language talk out loud: each speaks into their own phone and reads and hears the other in their own language.
Task
In Vietnam we agree on prices, repairs and rent with people who speak neither Russian nor English. Typing into a translator kills the conversation — it has to work by voice, at the pace of a normal talk, even with the phone lying on the table.
What was built
How it works: open the page and pick «I speak» and «they hear». On one phone you speak, and the app shows the translation and reads it aloud. With two phones you create a room, the other person scans a QR code, and each speaks their own language — the phrase appears on the other screen already translated and is read out there. The translator is told what the conversation is about, so prices, times and trade words come out right, and numbers and times are highlighted. Eight languages, including Vietnamese, Russian, English, Chinese and Korean. Runs in the browser and installs like an app.
Our role
Our own product: we built it for our own conversations in Vietnam and improve it on measurements, not guesses.
Result and current state
Anyone can use the free mode at lnpower.org/vt/: the browser recognises speech, AI translates it. The owner's paid modes — server speech recognition, a second AI that «listens» to make sense of quiet or distant speech, and a natural ElevenLabs voice — are billed per minute, so they are not public. In those modes, Vietnamese spoken a metre from a phone on the table is recognised with about 1.5% word errors (our own test).
Keep in mind: The free mode uses the browser's own speech recognition. It works best in Chrome on Android and on a computer; on iPhone it may be unavailable — then you type the phrase. Quiet or distant Vietnamese is recognised much better in the owner's paid mode.
